Farmworkers

Every Growing Season

Over 150,000 farmworkers come to North Carolina

Many farmworkers will start harvesting in Florida, make their way to Georgia, and then come to Western North Carolina where they will harvest apples, blueberries, Christmas trees, tomatoes, and more.

Agricultural workers are vital to the North Carolina economy, and yet their average salary is less than $20,000 per year. From our very beginnings through today, Blue Ridge Health is committed to offering dedicated support to farmworker populations and their families.

Challenges to the farmworker populations that we help support:

Farmworker populations often face significant barriers to receiving proper healthcare and support in their communities due to social stigma and financial burdens. The Blue Ridge Outreach team attempts to lessen these barriers to healthcare:

  • Language
  • Social exclusion
  • Behavioral health issues
  • Lack of transportation
  • Lack of evening hours at health clinics
  • Lack of insurance or cost of insurance

At Blue Ridge Health, we want to overcome these barriers so everyone has the chance to receive quality, compassionate healthcare. Through these barriers, we see opportunities to serve our community in the community — to bring affordable care right into the field for North Carolina agricultural workers and their families.
