Honor/Memorial Giving

In Honor

Wondering what to give the person who has everything? Celebrate a birthday, anniversary, wedding or retirement with an alternative gift to Blue Ridge Health in their honor. Upon receipt of your gift and acknowledgement letter or email will be sent to the person(s) you designate and a tax receipt will be sent to you. We do not specify the amount of the donation unless you specifically request that we do so.

In Memory

When a loved one has passed away, consider having family and friends make a donation to Blue Ridge Health rather than sending flowers. We will send a personal thank-you to each donor and we will also send the designated family a list of donors and their addresses (gift amounts will be kept confidential).

Honor/Memorial gifts can be made via secure on-line giving, mail or by phone.

Annual Appeal

Each Fall Blue Ridge Health launches an Annual Giving Campaign. This campaign is a building block for all future giving to Blue Ridge Health. The Campaign is designed to engage prospective donors while also stewarding existing donors. Through storytelling, the Annual Campaign conveys the work of Blue Ridge Health and the impact of the work made possible by your charitable gifts.

If you would like to be included in the Blue Ridge Health Annual Campaign, merely send an email to Kathryn McConnell, Director of Philanthropy at kmcconnell@brchs.com and share your name and mailing address. All are welcome.

Planned Giving

Bequest

The lasting impact of bequests - both large and small - can helped shape access to healthcare for many in WNC. For many a charitable bequest is the easiest and best way to make a future gift to the Blue Ridge Health. By means of your will or other estate plan, you can name Blue Ridge Health as the beneficiary of a portion of your estate, or of particular assets in your estate. Many of the most powerful gifts with an enduring impact have been bequests and estate gifts.

Giving by bequest costs nothing now, yet it may give you a great deal of satisfaction to know that your legacy will live on through the impact of your gift.

If you are considering this gifting option, our professional staff can consult with you and your professional advisors to create a bequest gift that will match your passion. Contact Kathryn McConnell, Director of Philanthropy at kmcconnell@brchs.com or call 828-233-2209 to discuss your options.

Stock Gifts

Long-term, appreciated stocks and securities are always an excellent asset to consider to provide charitable support to Blue Ridge Health. This type gifts provide a double benefit to you -- a current income tax deduction and the avoidance of capital gains taxes.

The most popular and most efficient way to transfer securities to Blue Ridge Health is by electronic transfer. Electronic transfers are performed when your securities are held in a brokerage account. The procedures for the free delivery and transfer of securities are as follows:

  • Notify your broker in writing that you wish to transfer your stock to Blue Ridge Health. The letter should indicate that the purpose is to make a charitable gift. Your broker can provide you with the necessary language required by their particular firm.
  • Instruct your broker to contact Kathryn McConnell, Director of Philanthropy at kmcconnell@brchs.com or call 828-233-2209 to obtain delivery instructions. Or, you can click here to print the electronic stock delivery instructions and give them to your broker. The information in these instructions is all your broker should need to make the security transfer.
  • When the transfer is made, your broker should again notify Kathryn McConnell, Director of Philanthropy, who will verify its receipt. The value of your stock equals the mean of the high and low values of the stock on the day it is received in the Blue Ridge Health account. (You should always consult your professional advisor before making a gift of stock and securities.)

Life Income Gifts

Life income gifts serve a dual purpose: They provide philanthropic support for Blue Ridge Health while also providing both a charitable income tax deduction and an income stream to you and/or your loved ones.

These gift vehicles can provide income benefits comparable to — ¬or in some cases exceeding — those that might be earned in non-charitable vehicles. Many donors establish life income gifts with assets that are producing a very small amount of income, such as cash or appreciated stocks that do not earn dividends.

Blue Ridge Health partners with the Community Foundation of Henderson County to offer three basic types of life income gifts:

A Charitable Gift Annuity provides a fixed income for the life of one or two donors calculated on the age of the donor. (gifts of $10,000+) This gift vehicle may be established without the assistance of an attorney.

A Charitable Remainder Unitrust which makes payments that fluctuate with the market and therefore may provide a hedge against inflation. (gifts of $50,000+) This gift vehicle requires the services of an attorney to craft the legal agreement.

A Charitable Remainder Annuity trust provides a fixed income like a gift annuity, but the tax treatment of the payout may be preferable for donors giving highly appreciated assets. (gifts of $50,000+) This gift vehicle requires the services of an attorney to craft the legal agreement.

As with all charitable gifts you should consult your professional advisors prior to making the gift.
